B.A.T Surfboards
Steve Kepler Brian Tudor Mark Dawson

B.A.T. surfboards function and quality.Bat surfboards ride incredible. Brian has that special gift for design and craftsmanship that puts his boards over the top. They combine an awesome balance of speed, function and simplicity. They have a technicians touch that gives them a special glide without being extreme. This is what makes his hand-crafted Bats so unique. They have a natural feel that cannot be duplicated in plastic or pop-out style boards.

Brian first started shaping in 1988. Since then he has shaped thousands of boards. These include thrusters, fun shapes, longboards and hybrid fish. Brian Tudor is on the cutting edge of surfboard design. His factory, located in East Central Florida, is just a short distance from Sebastian Inlet where Brian and his team riders perform weekly research and development sessions on all their latest designs. Brian is a very accomplished shaper. He works with pro surfer/shaper CT Taylor, Richard Price from Natural Art and in the past he has worked with Matt Biolis from ...lost. He has shaped for pros like Cory Lopez, Tommy O' Brien and Sean Tubbs to name just a few. You never hear a complaint about the way they ride or the construction they are made of. BAT surfboards dominate Central Florida lineups. Brian Tudor is the East Coast's equivalent to Al Merrick. Get on a Bat today and see just what we are raving about. You won't be disappointed.

Some people have their quads all backwards. What’s up with quads?
Are they all they are cracked up to be or just another gimmick?

This is not a new design. It’s been around at least since the early to mid 80’s. I think it started when MR was dominating back in the 70’s on a twin fin, someone got the ingenious idea to throw a couple more fins on. The problem with twin fin surfboards is they tend to skate and slide. They don’t have much drive to them, which can make them slow. If your surfing a twin fin you better hope the wave has it’s own speed because you most likely will not be able to drive the board off the fins. That has always been the knock on twins, they are too slow and you can’t pump them as fast to make your own speed. Enter the quad. The twin’s little brother with two more fins placed behind the two side skegs. If these boards are shaped right and the right fins are ridden you can instantly create a board that is fast, loose and drivey all at the same time. You can create that ‘almost out of control,’ ‘on the edge’ feel in and out of turns. Quads can be very fast. Make sure you get your quad from a reputable shaper . The Compound has a good stock of quads that you can choose from. Bat makes a good quad if you need info on a custom, let us know. Quads are great boards for every day surf. They can make a boring surf session in grovelly waves more fun. Believe it or not, There are pro’s that even swear by quads in the huge stuff. Todd Morcom surfs a quad at macking Pipe and Puerto Escondido. They swear they are faster than the conventional 3 fin. Of couse, it’s always good to have your trusty short-board thruster also.
One tip that is kind of obvious but that some surfers get wrong is this: Put the big fins up front and the smaller ones in the back. Another important tip: Don’t surf your fins too big on a quad. This will cause you to feel like the board is tracking or caught in a track during turns. Here are two fin combos I’ve used: 4.75 RFC glass fins for the twins and 3.75 RFC glass fins for the quads. The second combo is more lively: 4.3 future Vector II for the twins and 3.0 future shallow base plastic fins for the quads. Careful with future fins, the small fins come with two different bases so make sure before you buy your quad that your getting the right fins and then surf it up.

Board Problems

By the time Brandon broke this one in a fat barrel
Erie was already on the way with a replacement.

Now you don’t know what to ride and the solution can be pretty expensive. This has got to be the best time of year to be a surfer in Florida and the worst time of year to have BOARD PROBLEMS.
